Operation Get my Retainer to fit again!

I took off my braces a couple of years ago and got a retainer..which I wore for about a week and promptly discarded because it made me talk weird and drooly and gross. its been about two years since I dumped it in a drawer somewhere and forgot about it..now my friend is getting braces and was asking for advice, when she should get them, whether they hurt, etc. and was surprised when I spoke up, because she couldn't tell that I'd had braces. :( as in my teeth had obvious spaces and my front teeth were obviously trying to fly away.

My teeth have moved a bit, not that much, and they're no where near as bad as they looked before..but it got me thinking, I've got a whole summer ahead, and lots of alone time stuck at home, so why not try to make my retainer a habit again? It hasn't fit for most of the time it's been lost, so I googled "how to make my retainer fit again" and discovered that it is, in fact, possible, if you don't mind the pain, which I don't really mind, teeth-wise. As long as I can force the thing in, it'll start to do it's job. But my front teeth have moved forward a bit, it fits in the back but the two front teeth are too far forward, I can sort of fit the wire over them and move it back, so there's pressure. I'm planning a step-by-step moulding of my teeth, first, I'll keep trying to push the front teeth back, then see if it actually fits when they're close enough, even tightly, and then continue wearing it in 30 minute intervals until my teeth move back...I just hope this works!

  1. Hi, I would love to know if this worked for you? I have stopped wearing my retainer for about 1 year, my bottom teeth look fine but my front teeth have pushed forward a little. If this method worked I want to give it a try! Thanks!

  2. No actually it didnt, a pit of the plastic part of the retainer actually split off, i was afraid the entire thing would fall apart if i kept going so i went to my orthodontist and got a new one. The new one was made to be a bit tight so my front teeth got pushed back to where they should be, the old one still doesnt fit because my bicuspids moved inward a bit. Good luck and i hope this helped!

  4. Hi. I just got my braces taken off in March of this year. From March to now I have gotten 2 clear retainers. Now I have a new retainer that I haven't worn in like 2-3 1/2 months. Now I don't know what to do because I have a medium size gap in between my teeth and my retainer doesn't fit anymore. Also, I've just heard I have a dentist appointment on Janurary 12th? I think.. But now I don't know what to do to get my gap closed!! HELP?! Thanks

    1. If you have a visible gap i don't think this would work, just go to your dentist appointment and ask them how to fix it. You can try to force the last retainer in until then i suppose, but this didn't work with me, it was too painful and the force was making the retainer break. Another commenter said that they fixed their teeth by forcing the retainer in though, so you can try. I would just go get another retainer and wear it this time though

    3. How are your teeth now since you got a new retainer?

    4. I actually ended up getting braces again because of a jaw/speech issue. My teeth were still fitting in the new retainer and looked mostly straight before I got the new braces though.

  5. hi i can help:) bearing in mindi didnt wear them for like 6 month. Basically brush your teeth obviously and gums aswell then clean out the retainer with near to boiling hot water (heat is more willinging to shape) so then i literally stood infront of a mirror really close up and placed my teeth into the exact mould at first it wont fit you have to play with it for a while my trick was to get your index finger and your thumb and wrap it around the retainer and push it down and you will hear little clicks that will be the retainer ajusting itself ...you have to be patient and fiddle with them even when they fall out.Lastly, do not do this right before your orthodontist appointment it wont work ... at least 2 weeks before

    Hope this helped
I apologised for the longevity of it

  6. i have always wore my retainer every single night when i went to bed for about a year or so. i got home today and my dog got ahold of it and bit the back part of my retainer and twisted my other side of the retainer. i tried to run it under hot water to try and reshape it and push out the dents and twist it back. it only fits my front teeth and hurts towards the back. should i force it in for the night or just leave it out and wait to have my dentist make me a new one a couple days or so from now? it makes my teeth feel like they are shifting again with the way i tried to fix the retainer. and they hurt. i need help please!!!!

    1. First of all, pets love retainers, so I hope this is lesson learnt for the future (never leave them unboxed and around)
Second, if you haven´t done it yet by now, the best thing is ALWAYS seeing your dentist or orthodontist to get impressions for new retainers. Do this as an emergency issue.
If the originals are deformed and you try to squeeze your teeth in, all you will achieve is deforming the mouth arch and both your bite and teeth position will be affected.

  7. I got my braces off 2 years ago and wore my retainers for a year straight, however I had an awful tendance to take them out during the night in my sleep so because of this I stopped wearing them. Its not been over a year since I've worn them and judt over 6 months ago I went to the ortho and told him my problem, which he told me to force my retainer in. I did but again I took the retainer out during the night. I've only just started wearing them again, tonight, after getting worried about my teeth. I've forced my bottom retainer in a little and it feels a little sore but still fits well but my top retainer doesn't. I've shoved the back into the gaps of my teeth at the back of my mouth and it seems to be staying. I have not much pain but its not fully in. The retainer never did fit perfectly behind my front teeth due to two bridges - fake teeth - attached to the insisors so that's okay. My plan is to keep my retainer in constantly pushing it in at the back and fitting it from there slowly so that the teeth move and I can push the front up in place. I hope it works. This is how my ortho told me to do it if I had any other issues with it not fitting.
:-) This may sound smart but it wasn't to stop using the retainer in the first place.

  8. I wore my retainer after braces for the 2 years, and then wore it at night, then periodically as required. I stopped wearing it for 4 years. :( I fit the front 6 first (they moved slightly forward) for 3 days. Then I squeezed as hard as I could to fit the back. It took me 6 days. It's tight, but it's in. I will do the bottom one too, but that fits without forcing. Tale painkillers. Hope it helps.

  9. I got my braces off a little over a year ago, and I got my retainer a week later. I got it and wore it for about a week or so, and stopped wearing it since. I'v tried numorous times to try to wear them again, but my top one wont fit. But what im trying to do is wear them a little after school, and practice talking with them in, and summer vaca is coming up so ill have lots of time to practice. Just try to mould the wires a little so it fits your teeth better. Hoped it helped(:

  10. I have a clear retainer. I had braces from march 2011 to march 2012. I wore my retainer for about a year, but the cause of my braces was sucking my thumb, which I did when I got stressed, going in to year 10 at the time, there was a lot of stress, so I began to suck my thumb again and my teeth were going back, I put both my retainers in and bit down really hard, it was very, very painful but it seemed to work:-)

  11. My friend recently told me that when she last visited her orthodontist and told her that she have been trying to wear her too tight retainer in her mouth her orthodontist said that she immediately needs to stop, that it could cause tooth death if you try to hard to make it fit again. I was wondering if anyone had heard this before?

  12. I've never heard that before, full disclosure though, I'm not an orthodontist :)

  13. Hey I have a question? My teeth (bottom tooth) has moved slightly and my retainers fit for both top and bottom, but Im wondering the wire for my bottom tooth (I have hawley retainer) isn't lined up in the middle, the wire is sort of at the top of my tooth but the retainers still fit and all my teeth are in correct postion so its not hard to put the retainers on, but I don't feel pain for the bottom ones but pain for the top? Does that mean that my bottom retainers don't work even though I can fit them or something else? Thanks for answering and taking time to read

    1. I have no idea, if you're worried about it, you should call your orthodontist's office and ask them about it.
I had a fixed retainer on my bottom teeth, and a Hawley on my upper teeth. When my teeth shifted a bit, putting in the hawley hurt. Usually it didn't hurt immediately, but after a few hours my teeth were aching.

  14. 10 years later and I came across this post lmao...So, I got my braces off 2 years and 11 months ago. I wore my retainers (Hawley) religiously for 2 years (well, only at night but literally EVERY SINGLE night). And 11 months ago, I got lazy and stupid and just flat out stopped wearing my bottom retainer (I still wear my top one, I don't even know why I only stopped with the bottom). Anyway, yesterday I tried to wear it again and I'm IN SO MUCH PAIN. I've worn it for the past 30 hours (only taking it off to eat and brush teeth). It hurts like hell. Like it's SO BAD, but it does sort of fit. If anyone sees this, how bad do you think this is? It does fit, it just hurts, and I think my teeth are starting to shift back. I can't tell my parents because they would get too mad (and rightfully so, they paid good money for me to have braces). Anyways, do you think this is doing more harm than good? I also can't keep wearing in 24/7 because I have a job that requires me talking a lot and I work Wednesday-Saturday all day.
